It is estimated that by 2030, 95% of cervical cancer deaths will occur in developing countries. The goal of our project is to provide expertise and set up a sustainable and cost-effective model for cervical cancer screening built on local strengths.

Objectives of the project:
  • Establish a cervical cancer screening laboratory in Ruyigi, Burundi,
  • Leverage existing infrastructure (Rema Hospital and Paramedical School at Maison Shalom) for laboratory personnel and treatment facilities,
  • Ensure financial sustainability through innovative business models.

Marguerite “Maggy” Barankitse, is an exceptional Burundian. Maggy is a woman following in Mandela’s footsteps, giving heart and soul so that the children of Burundi will have a future. A native of Burundi, she is the founder of Maison Shalom, a Burundian non-governmental organization (NGO).
Maggy and her team have saved, raised and educated more than 20,000 children. In a tribute by international charitable organizations, Maggy was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009 and is already considered as being the modern-day Mother Theresa.
