The first Social Innovation in Health Initiative focuses on the pressing need of people affected by neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) and infectious diseases, such as malaria and tuberculosis.
Context
Every year, 500 000 people die from NTDs, 627 000 from malaria and 1.1 million from tuberculosis. These diseases perpetuate the cycle of poverty. They cause debilitating chronic conditions that impede an individual’s economic productivity. In children, these infections result in malnutrition, cognitive impairment, stunted growth and an inability to attend school. In pregnant mothers, anaemia results in poor birth outcomes. As a global community of innovators, we can cast the spotlight on these diseases and highlight high impact solutions that are improving the care delivered to these communities.
The Social Innovation in Health Initiative (SIHI) is a network of passionate individuals and institutions combining their skills and resources in support of key activities to promote social innovation in health. We are neither a formal partnership nor a funding body.

Objective
Ahimsa participated in the organization of the conference on 2 – 4 December 2015 where a selected group of role-players gathered to better understand the challenges faced in generating evidence and the capacity needs of social innovators, with the goal to produce a collaborative road map for the future.
Ahimsa is taking part to the organization of the “Social Innovation in Health Initiative” partner workshop which will explore the role that philanthropies can play in catalyzing community-driven health innovation from the Global South.
